What do I need to know before upgrading to PlanetPress Suite Version 6
Détails
Description
What is the procedure to update the installation of PlanetPress Suite to a later version?
Contents
This document will give you considerations and information on how to update your PlanetPress Suite installation to the latest version, either on the same or a different machine. It will not show you how to actually do the installation, but rather what collateral manipulations must be done when doing the actual update.
This only applies to changing major version, such as going from Version 6 to Version 7. Updating your suite within the same major version, for example from 7.0.3 to 7.1.4 only require running the installer and following the regular steps, as nothing is lost during the update.
Important Considerations
Before upgrading to the latest version of PlanetPress Suite, please consider the following:
- Your new installation does not need to be on the same computer. It is possible to migrate all your data as well as your license to a new server, all at the same time. For more information, see FAQ-1489: Migrating to a New Workstation.
- Your new installation will require a new activation with a different activation code, and follows a procedure that requires work by our customer service department's Activation team. This is required, regardless of whether the installation is done on the same machine or a different one. For more information, see HOWTO-1485: Upgrade to Latest Version.
- Installing a new version of PlanetPress Suite does not remove the older version from your machine. However, though they can coexist on the same computer, they cannot run simultaneously as services will interfere with each other between versions.
- Any update, installation or un-installation of PlanetPress Suite requires that the user making the change be logged on as administrator (power user and regular users do not have the proper rights). In addition, if installing on Windows Vista or higher you will be required to use Elevated Mode (aka UAC or User Account Control) to do the installation and run PlanetPress Workflow Tools Configuration Program. For more information, see INFO-1476: User Accounts.
Updating using the Upgrade Wizard
When upgrading from one version to the next major version on the same computer, the conversion of your files can be simplified using the Upgrade Wizard. The Upgrade Wizard facilitates the update by automatically importing all the settings, documents and resources from the older version to the new one.
The Upgrade Wizard will enable the user to import settings and files from versions of PlanetPress Suite higher than 4. Elements of each of the Suite's products will be available for the user to import, and while there will be an Express upgrade in which the Wizard will upgrade every element it finds automatically, a customization will also be available for the more advanced users so that they can import only certain elements of the previous version into the new version.
The elements that will be available for import are:
- All Software
- Software Activation Codes
- Printer Activation Codes
- Contents of Virtual Drive
- PlanetPress
- PPD files
- Installed Postscript Fonts
- Text Object's spell checker custom dictionaries
- PlanetPress Watch
- PlanetPress Watch compiled documents (.ptk, .ps, .psi, .psf)
- Active PlanetPress Watch config (ppwatch.cfg)
- PlanetPress Watch Custom Plugins (.dll)
- PlanetPress Watch Service configuration
- PlanetPress Watch Plugin Manager settings
- PlanetPress Watch Access Manager
- PlanetPress Fax
- PlanetPress Image
- PlanetPress Image Settings
Note that PlanetPress Design documents (.pp4, .pp5, .pp6, etc) will not be automatically converted into the latest version. This needs to be done individually for each document. However, this is not necessary for your new system to work right away as it doesn't use the original documents but rather the compiled versions, which are converted. You can update each document individually as you make changes to them in the future.
Updating Manually
When installing the newer version on a different computer, you will need to convert and/or transfer all your PlanetPress files manually, as the Upgrade Wizard cannot capture files and settings from a different machine.
The procedure for updating and migrating to a new computer are described in FAQ-1489: Migrating to a New Workstation. Please refer to this document for the exact procedure to be followed.
What about Version 3?
PlanetPress 3 cannot be directly updated to a newer version as its documents are in a different format which require a conversion into our newer file format. Also, PlanetPress 3 did not have any workflow configuration, meaning this procedure does not apply to it. The conversion of a PlanetPress 3 document to any newer version can be done by opening PlanetPress Design, going into File, Import, PlanetPress 3 document. This needs to be done for each PlanetPress 3 document that you want to convert.
