We have a new application that will require the use of many Image Resources within a PP5/6 document.

I have 3 questions.

1) Is there a limit to how many image resources we can use. The estimate I have been given is around 1800 full page mono PDF's. However each letter we print will only call on 1 or 2 of these images.

2) Is there a better way to import these into a PP5/6 document other than having to manually enter them?

3) Is there a better way of handling so many images?.

Thanks

1a) If you plan on adding all 1800 images into a PlanetPress Document this will cause problems. The document is going to be very very large and all issues involved with any large file will come into play.

1b) If you use dynamic imaging- What has more of an effect on things is the number of images per job. The fact that you have 1000s of images in a bank should not really effect things on the PlanetPress side.

2) Use dynamic imaging and optimized Postscript (formally run locally). However, you need something in the data itself to determine which images to actually use.

3) I would say answer 2 is the same here. Getting the images directly in the directory is the way to go. Things to note:

1) You need a way to choose the images dynamically (usually something in the data).
2) If you are using PlanetPress watch on another machine, that machine needs access to the folder with the images.

Thanks Danny,

This is the first time we have approached this type of project and I must have skipped dynamic imaging when reading the manual.

I best get reading.

Does PP6 offer any advantages over PP5 for this type of project? We are looking to upgrade later in the year but could bring it forward if there was a valid reason that assisted in this project

Hello John,

Having the latest version is always a plus for stuff like bug fixes and new features but for this exact case I am not sure if there is something specific that is changed in version 6 that would assist.

Yeah, if you try and attach all those files into your PP5/PP6 document it is a recipe for disaster. Your PP5/PP6 file would end up being used and working in the document would become very slow. Dynamic imaging was actually created just for cases like this.

If you have any questions along the road, feel free to post away and we will be more then happy to assist you.

Thanks for the offer of assitance Danny. Here goes with whats sure to be the first of many issues.

The images we are using are PDF's. Some will be single page PDF's others could be 3 or 4 pages but in a sinlge PDF file.

I have no way of knowing how many pages each image will have but I want all pages printing. Is there anyway to do this? Every time I try it just prints the 1st page which is sort of what I expected but wondered if we could make it overflow on to the next sheet?
