I have always just made a text box & pasted it in. Figuring out the margins with Page Setup under File in Word. Where it tells you top, left and right margins. To get the width I just add the left and right, then subtract them from the width of the page. I am not sure if there is another way to bring in text. The manual hasn't been updated for years and is many PSM versions old.

When you want to Place a word document in PSM, and select it, it is being converted into PDF via word (print to PDF) and loaded in PSM.

It seems there is a problem on your computer with generating the PDF or PostScript. There is no acrobat needed for this process, but word is needed to convert the .doc to PDF and a PostScript driver.

Can you tell me if there is a word application available on your computer. Can you print to file (PostScript Driver needed).

Best regards,

Alfons

Dag Ivo,

It might be that other customers have simular problems than you have, so I keep my replies here in English if that is OK for you.

Acrobat 8 shouldn't be any problem, although Acrobat is not needed for PrintShop Mail to load PDF files.

Could you try to print from Word to file, distill it and place that PDF into PDM. Is that possible? if not at what step does it fail?

Best regards,

Alfons

Hi Ivo,

Word 2007 has changed the internal fileformat (XML) and changed the extension of the file.

When selecting the word document in PrintShop Mail, the document is sent to word, and printed via the default windows printerdriver. Maybe that printerdriver isn't a PostScript printerdriver. Therefore a test to print the document to file and distill it would generate a PDF or not.

- If the PDF can be distilled, that PDF can be loaded in PrintShop Mail.
- If the Distiller has an error, the output from Word is not valid PostScript. This can be caused by the printerdriver (not PostScript) or by the content in word.

PrintShop Mail itself does not load Word files, they are printed to file, distilled and placed as a PDF in PrintShop Mail. I am very interested at what step the process fails.

What happens if the document is saved in an older version of word document? Is it working then?

best regards,

Alfons

Hi Ivo,

It seems there is a PostScript error while distilling to PDF. What printerdriver are you using as default printer? Is that a PostScript Printerdriver (it seems not to be.) Could you set a PS driver as a default printer?

Best regards,

Alfons

Hi Ivo,

Can you please send the Word file you are trying to import to support at printshopmail dot com ? I would like to try and reproduce.

If we would need more information, would you be prepared to join a web session so that we can view your screen?

Floris

I am having the same error message. I use Windows XP, Word 2003, and Acrobat Standard 7.0, and I just downloaded and installed PrintShop Mail 6.0.2 today (been using PrintShop Mail since 2003).

Instead of inserting the new pdf into PrintShop Mail, the newly created pdf is being saved into the same folder where the Word file resides. PrintShop Mail generates a "Failed to open PDF" warning and in the object box in the layout.

Then, when I browse to the folder where the newly created pdf has been saved, I cannot open it. This error message reads: "Acrobat cannot open [nameoffile].pdf because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged."

I suspect that PrintShop Mail's pdf drivers are not distilling, perhaps because of a conflict with Acrobat 7? I don't have any problem creating pdfs with my full version Acrobat.

I realize this is an old thread, I hope it's okay if I add some comments.

The error feedback from PSM when Word-to-PDF conversion fails has been improved in 6.1, hopefully this will provide a hint as to the cause.

Aside from this: PSM 6.0.2 does support Word 2007 documents, as long as you change the extension from ".docx" (or ".docm" for macro-enabled documents) to ".doc". This workaround will no longer be required in 6.2.

And aside from that: PSM 6.0.2 even supports Excel 2007 and Access 2007 databases, as long as you have the right prerequisites. The trick is to use ODBC. This workaround will no longer be required in 6.2.
