Is there any way to do a query for the magic number over the network?

This would be useful when activating printers located remotely, as the magic number could be copied and pasted in the the activation email request. This would eliminate transcription errors from manually entering the number.

One method which I have used is as follows.
It only works if the printer has a document storage facility (usually printer/scanner/copier machines).
Save the PlanetPress status page to disk and then add on the option to rip to the document store rather than printing. This will be specific to your printer model. Send the revised file to the printer, then remotely access the document store to retrieve the ripped document (usually a pdf or tiff).
Read the magic number.

The TallyGenicom printers don't work like that. I can store the status page in the printer flash, but it won't be RIPed, just stored as the raw PS.

Hello Ed,
The real answer is no, there is no way to query the printer magic number from the network. The reason is simple, the magic number is created in PostScript ON the printer's RIP and there are no standard way in the PostScript language to communicate over the network. Every printer manufacturer has its own network protocols and they do not interact with the PostScript interpretor.

Unless the printer you are using has the capability to print a digital image of the job and send it back somehow you cannot do this.

For situation where activating printers is a problem I suggest that you take a look at PlanetPress Server which solves this in most situations.

Best regards,

Thanks. I think we can insert a snippet into the status page that will make the printer return the status page.

We got it figured out. We added a line to write the magic number to a text file on the printer flash that we can then retrieve.
