Hi,

I've recently taken up a sys admin position with a new employer and inherited a couple of problematic PP Watch servers.

My main issue is with available disk space on C: drive. I was a little stunned to find that the apparent "Working Directory" for Watch is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Objectif Lune\PlanetPress Suite 7\PlanetPress Watch

Does anyone know if this can be relocated for an existing instalation via registry hack / system settings or am I going to have to look at a reinstallation (which i have my doubts about if this is specified by OL in the first place)

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Regards,

Adam

I did some more digging and found the following link which will move a bunch of folders:

http://www.objectiflune.com/OL/en-GB/Services/Support/KBArticle.aspx?KB=1466

However it doesn't seem to move the "documents" folder which is the main culprit. Any ideas?

Cheers,

Adam

Adam,

The directories listed on that KB articles are the only ones that are affected - the "working" directories, meaning the temporary folders where work is done.

PlanetPress doesn't have any method of changing where its configuration file and documents folder are located, but here's an alternative.

<obligatory warning>: This method is unsupported and is provided "as is", without any guarantee of any sorts as to its functionality or ability to perform any specific task. As long as your hard drive is formatted in the NTFS format (and not FAT32), you could create what is known as a "Symbolic Link" or "Junction Point" depending on your OS. If you have Windows XP/2003 or older, you can use Microsoft TechNet's Junction utility (see wikipedia article) to create a junction. In Vista/2008 and Windows 7, you can create Symbolic Links which are pretty much the same thing using the mklink command. See this wikipedia article for basic commands and links to the documentation.

Thanks Eric, thats a very unique solution.

I've just been advised by my local OL support agent that if i reinstall i will be able to choose to install completely to another drive.

I'll investigate both these solutions and see which suits best.

Cheers

Hi Adam,

Unfortunately, I do believe that the person you spoke to has incorrect information.

Actually, re-installing the software in a different drive will only change the location of the program files (C:\Program Files\Objectif Lune\PlanetPress Suite 7\), not the temporary files which are always in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\ folder. If it was that simple, I would have suggested it, but the only way to change the Documents and Settings is to install the Operating System on a different drive, not PlanetPress.

Hi Eric,

Yeah, I found out yesterday during a test install that it only impacted the program files.

I've settled on just relocating the "Working Directories" for now, as detailed in KnowledgeBase 1466 (linked in my second post), however i've had no luck with this either. When i add the entry and restart the services all working files continue to be created/updated in the existing "C:\documents and settings\all users" location.

Have you had any experience with the registry change?

I'm currently running Production on Windows Server 2003 R2 64bit and have tried the following.

1. Created E:\PlanetPress
Stopped services
Created V7WorkingDirectory registry key
Started services

nothing happened

2. Repeated steps above but also manually created the folder structure under E:\PlanetPress as per the list of work folders affected in the knowledgebase

3. Threw a full server reboot in there as well.

4. Same process but created V6WorkingDirectory registry key instead.

If you can advise if this knowledgebase is correct that would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Adam

Problem solved, for 64bit Windows the registry key needs to go in

HKLM\Software\Wow6342Node\Objectif Lune\PlanetSuite

Thanks for your help Eric

The on 64 bit systems the licensing needs to be either manually entered or edited to place the registry keys into the HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Objectif Lune area instead of HKLM\Software\Objectif Lune\PlanetSuite that is used on 32 bit systems.
