Since updating to Planet Press 7.2.3 we're seeing that each time Windows (Server 2003) boots the PlanetPress Watch 7 service fails to start on it's first attempt.

Windows System Event logging shows:

Quote:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7022
Date: 2/9/2011
Time: 2:39:14 AM
User: N/A
Computer: CPS-DDMS
Description:
The PlanetPress Watch 7 service hung on starting.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Each time--between 4-6 seconds later--we see another message in the Event log showing that the Watch 7 service has started successfully.

Everything appears to be functioning normally, however this error is throwing a Windows error window on each reboot. How might we prevent this error from being displayed?

We've considered creating a 'dependency' on another of the PlanetPress services for the Watch 7 service, but are concerned by creating a dependency 'loop' if we select the wrong service.

Joe,

Have you checked the PlanetPress Watch log file, and did you see any errors in it? The Windows Events log alone will not give us much clues about why this problem happens.

Are you sure it began since the upgrade to 7.2.3? What version were you using previously? And did you just upgrade, or did you also do changes to your Watch config?

Did you also make sure that you gave Watch proper admin credentials? These are reset when you perform an upgrade, so you might have to reenter the information. Make sure the Watch services are using an admin account credentials, preferably the same that you're currently logged as.

Regards,
Raphaël Lalonde Lefebvre

Thanks Raphael for your reply.

The watch log does not appear to be writing any "errors" during this time. Here is a copy of the section of the log which corresponds with the time of the Windows Event error message above:

(The Windows Event shows the Watch Service 'hung' at 02:39:14, then 9 seconds later at 02:39:23 that the Watch 7 service started successfully.)

The administrator of this server is not positive the exact version that was installed previous to the upgrade to 7.2.3, however they do regularly check and install any updates on a weekly basis so I'm comfortable saying that whichever version was current one week previous to the release of 7.2.3 was the installed version. They also added that they upgraded only, and did not make any changes to the config.

I've also verified that the Watch service starts using the same, Administrator-level user account that is logged into Windows on startup.

Just to reiterate, the issue is not so much that the Watch service does not startup, but that on the initial attempt Watch 7 service appears to be hanging, which is causing a Windows error message to display. Each time this happens, we do see that the service successfully starts within 10 seconds of the initial hang.

To elaborate, if we cannot do anything to prevent the service 'hanging', is there another PP service that we can create a dependency with (like Image or Fax) which would force the service to start up at a different position in the start-up process. Is there a service that would be recommended for this dependency?
