Hello,
I have periodic "out of memory" failures, and could use any help possible. Sorry, if this turns out to be a repeat of last weeks error.
The file is a comma delimited file that will be emailed and saved as-is. It is less than 1.4 megabytes, and there is plenty of hard drive space on all drives involved.
Also this process worked earlier for other files...
Thanks,

Planet Press 7.4.0.6912
Windows Server 2008 Release 2 Service Pack 1

Basic Process
A. Set Job Info: - Save the first four lines of the file in %6 (email list), %7 (folder name), %8 (email subject line) and %9 (file name).
B. Run Script - Replace blanks with under-score in %7, %9
C. Archive Path
- Add/Remove Text - Remove first 4 lines from beginning of job
- Send To Folder - Folder %7, Filename %9
D. Email Path
- Add/Remove Text - Remove first 4 lines from beginning of job
- Send Email - To: %6, Subject: %8

Mike,

Do you instantly get this error when processing the file, or it will happen intermittently after many files have been running, and not necessarely on the same file? What frequency does the error happens?

What is your current memory usage by the PlanetPress services? If it's very high, perhaps you can try restarting the services(including Messenger), and it should clear things up.

Can you confirm that the file is really 1.4 megabytes, and not 1.4 gigabytes? 1.4 megabytes shouldn't cause issues, but 1.4 gigabytes might cause issues.

Regards,
Raphaël Lalonde Lefebvre

Do you instantly get this error...
Just FTPed the file (1.4M) from the IBM down to the server. Within 3 seconds Planet Press picked it up and generated the same error message. I then sent a smaller file (133K) that was processed in the same way, and in a few seconds it was processed correctly. Currently this same file generates an error each and every time it is sent. Last week the same file that errors today, processed fine. This "out of memory" / "out of storage" type of error seems to happen after around 9am, 1 or 2 days a week. Last week it looks like Monday through Wednesday where okay, but Thursday and Friday had issues. We will reboot at the end of the day, and see if the problem goes away.

What is your current memory usage...
From the Windows Task Manager 18% CPU with 1,567,000 K Memory (Private Working Set). If this isn't the correct tool, is there another program I can get memory information from? I will need to wait until end of day to stop and start the service.

Can you confirm that the file...
I can confirm the file really is 1.4 megabytes. The file has 2950 records that are 500 bytes long.

Once again thanks,

Mike,

Seeing the memory usage, 1.5 gb memory usage is VERY high, and I'm not surprised that you are experiencing issues with such a high memory usage. (you're close to the 2gb hard limit)

Besides Add/Remove Texts, do you have anything else in your process that is happening?

How many processes do you have running at once?

Raphaël Lalonde Lefebvre

Raphaël,

Besides Add/Remove Texts, do you have anything else in your process that is happening?
Process: Autofile_Transmittal
____Branch: Other Filename = "?????" branches.....
____Branch: Filename = "FXXDYNA*" (This is the branch in question)
________Set Job INfo & Variables
____________%6 - @(1,1,1,8,490,KeepCase,Trim) - possible list of email addresses
____________%7 - @(1,4,4,8,400,KeepCase,Trim) - archival folder name
____________%8 - @(1,3,3,8,100,KeepCase,Trim) - possible email subject line
____________%9 - @(1,2,2,8,100,KeepCase,Trim) - file name
________Run Script:

____________txt = Trim (Watch.GetJobInfo (9))
____________txt = Replace (txt, " ", "_")
____________Watch.SetJobInfo 9, txt
____________txt = Trim (Watch.GetJobInfo (7))
____________txt = Replace (txt, " ", "_")
____________Watch.SetJobInfo 7, txt
________Rename:

____________Branch: Text Condition "ARCHIV2" is found at Line 4 Column 1 (This inner branch is executed)
________________Add / Remove Text:
____________________Remove 4 lines from beginning of file
________________Send To Folder:
____________________Folder %7 and FileName: %9
____________Branch: Default
________________Delete: Recycle bin
________Branch: Text Condition "EMAIL" is found at Line 1 Column 1 (This branch is not being executed)
____________Add / Remove Text:
________________Remove 4 lines from beginning of file
____________Send Email:

________Branch: Above Text Condition "EMAIL" not found

How many processes do you have running at once?
We currently have 35 processes running within Configuration, of which 14 are inactive. If it would help, I can certainly delete several of the inactive processes.

Mike,

At first sight, there doesn't seem to be anything unusual in there...

Perhaps it would be best if you opened a technical support issue, so that we can connect to your system, and you can show us the error happening. It will then be easier for us to troubleshoot it. You can go to our main web page, to Services->Support->Report an Issue, to open an issue.

Mike,

For faster performance, the Add/Remove lines task attempts to read the entire file in memory. Usually, this doesn't cause any issue but since your system might be running a little low on RAM, it looks like the task is unable to handle the size of the file.

As a workaround for now, you could always replace the task with a Scripting task containing the following code:
Code:
Option Explicit
Dim ofs, oNewFile, oOriFile, i, sName
sName = Watch.GetJobFileName
Set ofs = CreateObejct("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
set oOriFile = ofs.OpenTextFile(sName)
set oNewFile = ofs.CreateTextFile(sName & ".new")
for i = 1 to 4
  oOriFile.Readline
next
do while not oOriFile.AtEndOfStream
  oNewFile.WriteLine oOriFile.readLine
loop
oOriFile.Close
oNewFile.Close
ofs.DeleteFile sName
ofs.Movefile sName & ".new", sName

The script basically discards the first four lines, then reads every other line in the original file one at a time and writes it to the destination file. The task will requires very little RAM since only one line at a time is kept in memory. It may take a bit longer than the native Task to process the entire file, but I'm not even sure the difference will be measurable.

I am also running into the out of memory error, as well as overall performance issue with the PlanetPress Suite. It appears from Raphael's post that there is a 2Gb cap on memory accessible to PlanetPress. Does anyone know if that is true, and how to get around that limit?

cerest,

PlanetPress is a 32 bits software(even if you run it on a 64 bits system, it's still a 32 bits program), and as such has the limitations of 32 bit programs. One of them is the memory usage, and the services of PlanetPress can only use up to 2 gb of memory. Of course, even if you don't actually reach 2 gb, you may run into performance issues long before that.

As for getting around this, each PlanetPress solution is unique, and ways of avoiding this issue will change from solution to solution. What applies to one solution may not necessarely apply to another. Some general tricks to optimize a Workflow solution:

- Use multi-threading and self-replicating processes, allowing you to take advantage of a multi-core environment. (by default, even if you have let's say a quad core, only one will be used)
- Some actions can be replaced by scripts that will provide better performances in certain contexts. (though you need to know scripting, obviously)
- In some cases, splitting your data can limit the memory used to process one big job which would otherwise eat up all your memory. Processing 1000 data files with 100 pages each will take much less memory than processing a single file with 100000 pages.

These are some general tricks, and there are others, but as I've said, we'll need to look at your own solution to see what's applicable to you, and what's not. I suggest that you contact Technical Support. You may call 1-866-348-5863, or use the web page:

Thanks for the reply Raphael. Do you know if there is any plan to move to a 64 bit architecture in the future?
