Hello,

One of my customers use Planet Press Image to create PDF output in the workflow. When he creates the PDF in using version 6, the size of PDF is around 10K. But when he creates the same PDF (by running the same workflow in version 7), the size of PDF is around 100K.

Since he is using the same workflow with no change of settings - the data is also the same used in both version, does anyone know why version 7 generate a bigger size PDF?

Thanks,

PP_learner,

We are aware of the fact that version 7 produces larger pdf files than the previous versions. PlanetPress uses the Adobe Library behind the scenes, and version 7 obviously uses a more recent version of it than 6 did. This means more features and more support for all kind of pdf files, but a side effect of this is that pdf files are now bigger.

Unfortunately, we don't have control over how the Adobe Library is made, and therefore there isn't much that we can do about this. Try maybe optimizing your form(use smaller/lower res images), or change Image's quality settings options. You may be able to produce a smaller file this way, but even with this, the file will probably still be bigger than it would be in version 6 with the same optimizations.

Hello,

The difference in range of multiple times between the PDF size in PP6 and PP7. The reason of concern is the storage size here because the same storage size is now not enough. My customer had generated sample PDF about 30KB in version 6, but the same PDF is about 300KB in version 7. So this is 10 times as much and this is why the size becomes a major problem.

I had tried the optimize option - reducing picture size, but there is still a big gap between PDF size generated by version 6 and version 7.

Please help provide some documentations where I can explain the difference on the result PDF i.e. the Adobe version used in ver. 6 and ver. 7

PP_learner,

The current version of PlanetPress 7 uses the Adobe PDF Library version 10, whereas version 6 used Adobe PDF Version 7. With a difference as big as three versions, it's not surprising that version 10 would contain more features, and therefore produce larger files. But with this comes more compatibility with current pdf standards, as well as more features to allow us to implement more functionalities. Compared to version 6, there are MANY new features in regards to pdf, some of which might not have been possible to implement without upgrading our libraries.

With that said, I do find that 30kb vs 300kb is huge. While I would expect larger files, I wouldn't expect 10 times larger. Are you sure you generated the pdf file using the same tasks and options that you did in version 6? For example, if you used Image or Digital Imaging in version 6, but Create PDF in version 7, the two tasks are different and could produce different results. Create PDF uses some standard default quality settings, whereas Image/Digital Imaging(called Digital Action in v7) offers customizable options, including many different quality settings, customizable resolutions and the possibility to embed or not embed fonts.

Speaking of fonts, this is something you could check as well. Are there more fonts embedded in the v6 pdf compared to the v7 pdf files? If so, that could increase the size of the pdf files, and there could be some reasons for this that aren't related to the Adobe PDF Library version. For example:

- Option to embed all fonts checked in version 7, unchecked in version 6.
- If both versions are on a different machine, one could have more fonts available, and is therefore embedding more fonts in the pdf.

There could be other reasons, but this is something to verify. You can see that in Adobe Acrobat, in the File->Properties.

Do not hesitate to contact Support if you need more help, as I feel that the cause of the problem may be more than just the Adobe PDF Library version. Perhaps Support would be able to investigate your environments and the differences between the v6 environment vs the v7 environment, and see something that could be causing this huge difference of file size.
