We are trying to print PDFs in a workflow that captures files in a folder and sends them to a Bizhub or HP printer using a printer queue output. We include the printer name as part of the file name so can use a file name condition to route it to the appropriate printer in workflow. Some PDF files are slightly different than 8.5" x 11" so will not print without manual intervention at the printer due to a paper size mismatch. Printing the same document from acrobat reader with 'fit' enabled in page sizing and handling prints without intervention. Is there a way to force PDFs to print with 'fit' enabled from workflow?

Hi Dave,

There is no "fit" option in Workflow. If your printer driver has the option in it, you may be able to use "Print Using a Windows Driver", and use the driver's own scaling options. If not, there might still be a way to simulate it using a Design template.

First, create a new template, and set the emulation to PDF. Import one of your pdf files as sample data. Right-click the sample data and set the pdf as background. Then, in the Configuration Components, double-click on the newly created Picture object. In "Settings", set the "Fit setting" to "Best fit". Then in the Basic Attributes, set the width and height to 8.5 and 11. Using this method, the pdf will be resized to fit a 8.5x11 page. Once you're done, send this template to Workflow, and use it to print your pdf files (if you were using Print Using Windows Driver with "auto-detect", change it to this new .ptk form instead)

Note that this is not entirely the same as Acrobat's "Shrink" option, and might still look a bit different, but at least it will fit. It's possible to make a "nicer" shrinking, but it would require some more advanced logic. Lastly, it's worth pointing out that the newest Workflow, OL Connect Workflow, did add the "Shrink to fit" option to the Print Using a Windows Driver, which will shrink the pdf files to make sure it fits. So if you were planning to eventually upgrade to Connect, that option would become available.

Hope that helps!

It should work. However, we have some reports that some combinations of PlanetPress versions, how a PDF is built and which driver is used may result in an incorrect paper size being used.

In addition to trying Raphael's suggestions, I would kindly ask that you contact Support and provide them with the necessary resources to recreate the problem so that we can take a look at it in the future.

Ok. I'll give the new form (.ptk) option a try. Unfortunately, the Bizhub windows driver doesn't have the same option to scale that is present in the adobe reader print dialog. The files that don't print due to paper size are mostly smaller than 8.5 x 11. Many of these were scanned in China so will have odd sizes, like 8.08" x 11.01". These print fine without any alterations directly from a Unix server, but require manual intervention at the printer to confirm the use of the 8.5 x 11 tray/paper size.

Went through your steps and appeared to cover everything. Once document was set up (sample data as PDF file, select PDF emulation, set as background) then setting the fit to size setting and 8.5 x 11 size in the picture object - I saved as a template and sent it to workflow. This created a .ptk file that I used in the workflow Printer Queue Output.
Restarted workflow and tried a few prints. This error appeared in the service console:

PDF Emulation is not available in this version with line

W2032: Error producing job of document TESTtemplate for printer PRNTNAME: PDF Emulation is not available in this version

Printer Queue Output: Printer Output Failed

Our version is 7.6.2.9999. Is the PDF resizing not supported in our version of did I set something up incorrectly?

Hi Dave,

You may have the basic Watch package of PlanetPress. PDF Emulation requires either the Office or Production version of the product.

Hmm, this could limit our options, since neither PDF Emulation, nor the ability to use a printer driver's settings, are available in the basic Watch package. That said, as Yannick suggested, it may be a good idea to contact Technical Support, and see if they might have some more ideas that you can try, and see what your options are.
